Annotation

This study explores the impact of Hong Kong educational language policies regarding South Asians, in particular at primary school level, in pre- and post-colonial periods. It is argued that English' paramount status has started to be shared by Cantonese, which has turned up as the ‘high’ language in post-handover Hong Kong, constituting the main obstacle for South Asians to learn Chinese as a second language to gain upward mobility in Hong Kong society.
