This article examines 248 linguistic landscape items, assembled in two urban Valencian settings, representative of public and private institutions. It reveals existing linguistic and ideological conflicts such as the discrepancy between institutional norms and language practices, and supplies proof of the implicit and explicit mechanisms that define the ‘de facto' language policies.
