Drawing on research conducted in three Cape Town townships, this study focuses on one particular aspect of codeswitching, viz lexical borrowing, in Xhosan, one of South Africa's languages. Lexical borrowing in Xhosa is presumed to result from the need to simplify expression by employing syllabically shorter English words.
