This study discloses that for the children in the studied immigrant Lebanese-Muslim and Chinese family, the successful acquisition of mainstream literacies depended upon adult members' selective acquisition and transmission of what Bourdieu terms ‘the instruments of appropriation’, required to gain access to mainstream literacies.
