Annotation

This paper describes the origins and main features of French discourse analysis. Particular emphasis is put on its attitude towards subjectivity, which is strongly linked to European theories of linguistic “enunciation”. Two concepts are presented: “enunciation scene” and “ethos”, and illustrated by two examples (viz a political program and a whiskey company ad). It is argued that the existence of various trends in discourse analysis worldwide constitutes a condition to its development.
