Examining the impact of Ghanese teachers' definition and perceptions of literacy on their approach to primary classroom literacy teaching and learning, this study argues that despite of Ghanese teachers' and society's pejorative attitudes towards mother tongue/bilingual education, in the real classroom practice, teachers do codeswitch between English and the local language as pupils' comprehension of English is perceived as insufficient.
