Accepting the notion of ‘discourse metaphors’ (Zinken et al., 2008), this case study of the metaphor THERAPY IS A JOURNEY across various psychotherapeutic discourse levels, taking into account theoretical construct formulation, pedagogical frameworks and real therapeutic talk transcripts, demonstrates how the inherent meaning fixedness as well as pliability makes conceptual metaphors particularly fit for transmitting a required sense of theoretical continuity whilst allowing for variations across each level. The current approach may also add to the growing therapeutic concern with furnishing ‘feedback’.
