This paper explores how exactly ‘new’ categories of knowledge are formulated in Spanish secondary school social science textbooks, and how they functionally relate to ‘old (or existing)’ knowledge, as discursive phenomena of underlying cognitive teaching and learning strategies. It is also perceived that what is claimed to be proposed as knowledge in textbooks often contains an ideological basis.
