This discourse analytic study of nine triadic patient-partner-oncologist consultations, performed in an outpatient cancer hospital in Santiago de Chile, reveals how companions can be of great value. Discharging the patients of many discouraging tasks, attending their well-being, constructing a partnership and providing essential information to the clinic are cases in which the controlling power that some may practice in the medical encounter can be outbalanced.
