Annotation

This study examines the rationales behind a period of advocacy of Spanish language education in the United States from 1914 to 1945, including key policy actors and venues for their advocacy. Three main rationales are evaluated against the historical development of US economic and geopolitical concerns in Latin America, and assessed on their own terms, namely, to what degree they effectively generated enlarged Spanish language education in the US between the two world wars.
