This study explores the effective role of the Académie Française (AF) and other bodies in French language policy. Popular linguistic misrepresentations ascribe a 'restricted and prescriptive' French language policy tradition to the impact of the AF, thus neglecting the role of language ideologies, and consolidating exultant opinions about English as a democratic, borrowing language, better fitted as a lingua franca.
