Annotation

This paper provides a speech act based (syn- and diachronic) analysis of Tony Blair’s 2006 political ‘slave trade apology’. It also demonstrates the value of metalinguistic data as a type of addressee evaluation which can explain the functioning of political phenomena in society. Finally, it introduces the notion of personalist ideology as a means of understanding how addressees judge speaker intentions.
