Drawing on Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness model, this volume reports on a large-scale contrastive quantitative analysis of multiple face-threatening acts in authentic institutional discourse, in particular native English, native Dutch, and English-Dutch interlanguage business letters. The study focuses on pragmatic, interlanguage, and crosscultural variation.
