Annotation

K. and T. distinguish between the meaning of a linguistic form and the message it communicates, the latter being richer because of the language user's ability to draw conclusions from incomplete information. Many putative properties of sensory verb complements are shown to be pragmatic inferences from knowledge of or assumptions about the nature of the event referred to with the complement, and from the semantic oppositions between the particular meanings signaled in any given case and the other meanings available.
