Annotation

This study examines various usages of the Japanese response forms 'hai' and 'ee', which correspond to English 'yes', except when they are used as a response to negative questions. The diverse senses, such as 'agreement', 'assent', etc. which can be associated with them, are then explained on the basis of universal communicative principles such as those proposed by Grice (1975: 'Logic and conversation').
