Drawing on Natural Semantic Metalanguage, this article provides a comparative analysis of Russian and Anglo communicative norms and values linked to the English words advic(s)e and their closest Russian counterparts, and shows how the different meanings of these words are related to differences in cultural practices, norms, and values.
