Annotation

This conversation analytic study of 23 h of Japanese student discussions in L2 English shows that non-speech sounds processed by recipients to the immediate interaction are always oriented to by the speaker, whereas out-of-group noise is oriented to if it occurs when the speaker has already pointed to some trouble in the talk, using noise as a device for postponing discussion of the next item.
