This paper challenges some of the general assumptions about irony as a deliberate pragmatic action in the light of current research in psycholinguistics and cognitive science on meaning, consciousness and human action. It offers an alternative, dynamical perspective of intentional action that better accounts for the psychological complexities involved in the creation and comprehension of ironic acts.
