Drawing on quantitative collocation data from English, Mandarin, and Russian, this paper discusses the cross-linguistically widespread uses of fear expressions, that can be perceived as serving pragmatic purposes, and validating “endophoric evidential” (Plungian, 2001) in that the fear emotion is recruited as direct personal information source in the epistemological stance construction.
