Annotation

This paper discusses how Murriny Patha women perform different social actions, such as kin-based teasing, by manipulating symbolic objects. Linking particular body parts to particular kin classes, these women, when observing a cultural outsider making a forearm-holding gesture, typically linked to brothers-in-law, re-associate the gesture to the husband–wife relationship, thus initiating a prolonged teasing episode.
