This comparative study discusses the way of situating and relating oneself with the other in the place of interaction in American and Japanese conversations; the latter can be explained by a mindset of ‘ba’; Japanese referential shifting from the first to the second person pronoun is proposed as another pragmatic and interactional appearance that can be acounted for by the 'ba' idea.
