Annotation

Analyzing Saudi Arabic and English euphemism strategies, this paper reveals some (dis)similarities attributable to cultural and religious beliefs, life-styles, and norms. The Saudis and the British have recourse to taboos, when dealing with death and lying, but almost never for bodily functions; Saudis have more ways of expressing euphemisms; and no relationship exists between euphemism strategy choice and gender. It is argued that enhancing second/foreign language learners’ awareness of euphemism is indispensable for intercultural communication.
