Annotation

This study focuses on the pragmatic motives underlying English and Spanish speaker's choice of the rare speech act of implicit complimenting. These compliments are preferred when assessing someone's capacities, performances or personal appearance in order to elude face-threat, particularly when the relationship between the interlocutors is not (yet) solid. Finally, it is also shown that some implicit compliments demonstrate recurrent linguistic patterns, which indicates a tendency of explicitness.
