Annotation

This emic study focusses on intercultural interactions between Māori and Pākehā, to shed light on the distinctive characteristics of politeness in New Zealand English (NZE) workplace discourse. It explores the important value of egalitarianism in NZ society, and its impact on the interactional achievement of politeness in different NZ communities of practice. It then discusses how this is linked to the stylistic dimension of formality.
