This study re-examines the Japanese routine formula, yoroshiku onegaishimasu, and its relation to politeness. The recognition of the pragmatic tachiba-role condition entitles the speaker to utter this formula, whick acknowledges the interactive process with the hearer.The formula occurs in ritualistic greeting, and as part of a request or as confirmation of a request. Its interpretations shift, according to the proceeding of the given interaction, and its presence marks statement closing.
