Annotation

This paper represents the bodily aesthetics, consumption patterns, and daily linguistic practices of Brazilian hip-hop affiliated, politically conscious, poor male Brazilian youth in late 1990's Rio de Janeiro. Daily conversational rap lyric quoting is used as discursive strategy of racial empowerment, as a kind of linguistic ‘technique of the self’, enabling speakers to manage the racial appearance of their coloured body, whilst evading negative associations.
