This article reviews how variation theory could be elaborated and improved via the explicit reception of absolute variables alongside the conventional relative ones. The acount of the overall frequency of any linguistic characteristic against some independent measure appears to fit an extensive conception of language use, namely the complex process of constructing discourse as an entity of form and meaning.
