This study sketches the linguistic diversity of The Torres and Banks Islands, two small archipelagos of northern Vanuatu and explores its social foundations and its historical dynamics. Whereas northern Vanuatu is still linguistically diverse at present, the enhanced power disequilibrium amongst languages possibly makes the more fragile varieties vulnerable in future decades.
