Annotation

Given the lack of a universally assumed working definition of a language, this paper suggests that the ISO 639 family of standards, published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), might constitute the keystone of an appearing mondial regime of language recognition. This regime is being swiftly constructed by the booming IT industry and the Internet, both of which demand precise and uniform standards on languages and scripts in order to operate effectively and profitably. An obstacle to surmount is the possibly detrimental and separative religiously-grounded foundation of the regulatory regime.
