Examined Chinese netizens’ online discussions, on the ‘Protecting Cantonese Movement’ in mainland Chinese Guangzhou, appear to draw on Cantonese traditional heritage and international prestige in advocating its maintenance as regional lingua franca. Finally, the creation of a ‘harmonious’ multilingual society in mainland China may be achieved via the respect of individuals’ language rights.
