Based on P. Harder and C. Kock (1976: 'The theory of presupposition failure'), this paper characterizes the tough talk (so-called Gumshoe English) of a Philip Marlowe in terms of presupposition failure. K. points out the hero's 'immersion' in a cynical subculture and his (partly subconscious) routines to hide his moral and emotive self.
