This study draws on the Rudeness Scale to delimitate the inclination of various (US) racial groups to verbally insult strangers, linking insights from Swann’s self-verification theory, opposing ego defensiveness ideas, and Larsen et al.’s affect intensity work with a dispositional perspective of verbal crudity that stresses its application as a tool in interpersonal struggles over “face", status and power.
