This study examines American adolescent girls' motivations for preserving or retracting from nonstandard variants during and after their final high school years. The retreat level appears socially differentiated, in line with time results. Future registration in a local college, and adjustment to a local (Irish or Italian) ethnic network appear to forecast high school retention.
