Annotation

Drawing on the behavior of the Japanese question particle, this article argues that the choice between extended and partial answers is defined by informativeness in accordance with Gricean maxims. Whereas Japanese wh-questions distinguish between fully informative and informative enough answering levels, no formal English way exists to ask for a sufficiently informative answer.
