Annotation
The contradiction in the meaning of 'or', which separates mutually exclusive items as well as equivalent items, is said to have survived because there was an implicit understanding of how to solve the lexical ambiguity in a given context. K. proposes that the essentially disjunctive character of 'or' is maintained when it distinguishes equivalent items by raising it into a disjunction of two different performatives in deep structure.
