Annotation
An attempt to explain the occurrence of passives in written English on the basis of a 'polarity hypothesis' that says that a sentence is most communicatively efficient when all the frontal properties are at the beginning of a sentence and the opposite final properties are at the end. Frontal properties are givenness, animacy and agency. The claim is tested empirically.
