This paper discusses aspects of the theoretical and methodological disorder concerning the concepts of language function, text type and genre, and suggests a pragmatic reconceptualization of text type as the overall force of a text, defined as an overarching textual function arrived at by inference processes implementing contextual knowledge. This inferential approach takes into account the dynamism of this intuitively required superordinate construct.
