Annotation

This comparative study proposes that the greater frequency of hedging in praise and the impersonal syntactic structures observed in Japanese book reviews may be linked to Japanese politeness norms and writers’ wishes to stay non-committal evaluators. On the other hand, in English book reviews, the lower frequency of hedging in praise and the tilt to employ personal syntactic structures may be linked to positive politeness and writers’ readiness to assume responsibilities as evaluators.
