This article advocates a traditional account of explicit performatives as self-verifying indirect speech acts, confiding in Bach's distinction between a locutionary and a stative sense of what is said. In reply to Jary's and Pagin's arguments, it is claimed that in the case of explicit performatives, speakers do assert the literal content.
