This paper reviews ‘Speaker Design’, or the strategic practice of linguistic varieties in interaction to attain some communicative output (e.g. identity projections), as illustrated by the example of a shift from standard Austrian German into Bavarian-Austrian dialect in an Austrian TV show in order to generate negative opponent alignment.
