Drawing on naturally occurring pivot utterances in French, German (Siebenbürger Sächsisch variety), English, Swedish, Estonian and Finnish, this paper discusses the phenomenon, its basic resources and construction methods, its dependence on other grammatical construction methods and the link between its use and activity types. It also charts its empirical background, and considers its theoretical relevance for a grammar of conversational language.
