Annotation

This article discusses ‘face’'s historical (Chinese), negatively connotated roots, attempts to whitewash the term (in English) in the 1940's, Goffman's separation of term and roots in the 1950s, and the controversy since the 1970's on the suitability of its use as a universal in linguistics (given its link to orientalist discourse and translation/meaning issues).
