A Cognitive-Pragmatic Model (CPM) is presented that explains how expressive options and co-constructed Sucessive Single-Word Utterances (SSWUs), both conversationally-produced and discourse-sustained, define the first steps in the change from single-word to multiword child speech, as confirmed by data on L1 French acquiring children.
