Drawing on discursive psychology and ethnomethodology, it is argued that im/politeness evaluations may be comprehended as a social practice form, requiring consideration of the wider participation framework, and of the analyst positioning vis-à-vis that order. Participation footings appear to be variable, cumulative and distributed.
