Exploring five YouTube videos, labelled “Asians in the library”, and four parodic responses to it, this paper revises the communicative competence (CC) notion: multiple competences are needed in the online heterogeneous YouTube speech community, with its own constraints. It advocates a cognitive anthropological conceptualization of CC, which allows the shared comprehension of stereotypes midst a group of people.
