This study concentrates on a main factor in the process of competent Japanese route description, -intersubjectivity-, which is explored in terms of the blend of spatial frames of reference (FOR) and gestural representations. These phenomena incite us to revise the skill-based, individual-directed “communicative competence” notion and to enlarge it in terms and favor of a practice-based, collaboration-directed kind of “competent communication.”
