This paper shows how in Tongan (Pacific Islands) intersubjective negotiations on alternate English and Tongan uses, entitlement ideologies occupy a central place. Revising communicative competence in the global era requires an involvement with the manner in which old and new forms of power and imparity mold it at the convergence of global and local dynamics.
