This paper on conflict in binational Polish/English stepfamilies in the UK, between Polish mothers’ concern with protecting and expanding their children’s linguistic and cultural identity and their English partner’s restricted Polish competence, explores various functions of and motivations for language choice and their effect on interactants' participation status and identity.
