This article explores the refusal strategies used by a group of Iranian English language learners when rejecting offers, suggestions, invitations and requests, both in their first (Persian) and second (English) languages. These appear to be strongly connected with some Persian cultural schemas, especially that of tă’ărof (ritual politeness).
