This paper discusses how global migratory patterns cause meaningful changes in the local linguistic and cultural ecologies in both the North and the South. Changing identities and “linguistic citizenship” (Stroud 2001) appear in local narratives of efforts to broaden or shut spatial divides, and in junctures of language shift, maintenance and stability.
